    3. Smoking delivers nicotine, an addictive drug, into your body.
    4. It affects your brain, heart, cardiovascular system, lungs, DNA, skin, Endocrine system, hormones, immune system,
       senses, and oral health.

Effects of smoke on your body:

  • Your Brain – increases nicotine receptors which will increase cravings
  • Your Heart and Cardiovascular System – Raises blood pressure, stresses the heart. You are more likely to form clots in your blood stream, damages your blood vessels. Smoking increases levels of unhealthy cholesterol called plaque. Smoking introduces carbon monoxide in your blood stream and lungs.
  • Your DNA is damaged and after enough damage, cells grow out of control and can create a cancerous tumor.
  • Your Skin is impacted by smoking by drying skin and loosing elasticity.
  • Your Endocrine system is affected by smoke and increases risk of type 2 diabetes.
  • Your Hormones are affected by smoking by lowering estrogen, memory issues, dry skin, and hair thinning.
  • Your Immune System is impacted by smoke. Your White Cell count rises in an attempt to fight the inflammation and damage from tobacco.
  • Your Muscles and Bone - The carbon monoxide in smoke does not allow your muscles to absorb oxygen and blood easily, therefor you tire more easily.
  • Your Senses are impacted by smoke and can cause sight and hearing losses.
  • Your Oral Health is impacted by smoke and can cause mouth ulcers, gum disease, stained teeth, and cavities.

Short Term Goals:

  1. Cut number of cigarettes smoked daily in half.
  2. Identify smoking triggers and avoid them.
  3. Construct a list of reason to quit.
  4. Find strategies that help reduce cravings.
  5. Visit with your physician often to discuss your progress

 

Long Term Goals:

  1. Quit smoking permanently.
  2. Improve lung function.
  3. Exercise more frequently
  4. Chew gum or hard candy.
  5. Keep busy
  6. Contact additional resources
